Herdade do Portocarro project is based on a philosophy of production of finest wines in limited and exclusive quantities. These wines possess a intense and complex personality: they are tense and earthy, but also elegant and fresh. They are aimed at the discerning, sophisticated consumer who looks for and enjoys to taste the difference. Its first wines – Herdade do Portocarro, Anima and Cavalo Maluco – were immediately positioned amongst the top rated national wines.
Located half way between the beautiful Peninsula de Setubal and the hot Alentejo plains, this 18 ha single vineyard has been planted on a hilltop facing South and 60 m above the river Sado. Surrounded by trees, it benefits from the Atlantic ocean’s cool breezes. The vines are nourished by a light clay soil which is also very rich in sílica and calcium, with a Ph around 7,5.
Since José Mota Capitão became involved in the wine business, about 15 years ago, he has been known for creating innovative and elegant wines that enthrall from the first sip. He has been recovering nearly extinct indigenous grapes and experimenting with selected classic varietals, thus crafting wines where acidity plays a huge part. Acidity and terroir are José’s magical ingredients in the production of wines that are hard to forget.
